Scottish Championship Show Critiques 2013
Judge:Caroline Ackroyd-Gibson Dogs
Many thanks to the committee of the Scottish CKCS Club for making my judging experience so enjoyable and my stay so comfortable. It is always a pleasure to venture over the border where everyone seems to take on a relaxed manner.
I was lucky to have a very good entry of dogs to examine and was spoilt for choice in many classes. Although there was quality in the higher classes some of the lower classes were very sparse with few up-and-coming stars.
Overall I found an improvement in front assembly and movement since I last judged, but length of the frame is increasing and consequently balance is deteriorating. Some dogs I could mentally split in to three pieces and would have looked so much better with the middle section removed! Croups were still an issue with low tail set and incorrect carriage affecting some nice exhibits that were penalised for this.
Heads were a shock. I understand not all of us see a cavalier head in the same light but we do have a breed standard and one of the fundamental requirements is for a “gentle expression”. Many otherwise nice dogs had small, mean, almond shaped eyes, which were light in colour. Stops were so sloping that there was no definition to the skull and many lacked cushioning to the muzzle or fill under the eyes. We must pay attention to any diversion form our breed standard as it is this that holds the key to our wonderful breed not being changed by fads or fashion.
Class 1. VETERAN (3,1)
1st Lunam’s Nustoal Red Baron von Tingewood
2nd Craig’s Miadahl Ruairidh Tri of good size and attractive markings. Shorter in loin than 1 but lost his topline on the move. Masculine head type with well cushioned muzzle. Very happy on the move.
Class 2 MINOR PUPPY (7,0) Two lovely black and tan babies headed this class.
1st Smith’s Beaudale Georgie Porgy
Such a sweet promising boy. Lovely size with excellent bone. Well constructed with correct angulation, Kept an excellent topline on the move with a beautifully carried tail and moved so confidently. Soft, expressive head with excellent earset. To be hyper-critical I would prefer a richer tan.
2nd Telfer & Pallister’s Lacouture King Of Rock
Another striking puppy. Really catches your eye standing with superbly presented, gleaming coat. Gorgeous, large dark, round eyes and head with plenty of cushioning to give a melting expression. Just tended to be a little too proud of his tail.
Class 3 PUPPY (4,0)
1st Bubb’s Evan Elp Us
Standout winner in this class. Lovely puppy that showed and moved very well. Gorgeous head and expression with large dark eyes, correctly cushioned muzzle, and black nose pigment. Well set on, crested neck, level topline and tailset. So well presented and schooled. A certain candidate for his crown in the future. Beaten in the challenge for Best Puppy by the delightfully precocious bitch.
2nd Godwin’s Cavaleigh Angelo Smaller in frame than 1 and not showing himself to his best advantage. Super soft expression with beautiful eyes which contribute to his gentle demeanour. Very well constructed with good angulation and well carried tail. Moved a little close behind. Another beautifully coated and presented puppy.
Class 4 JUNIOR (10,2) I really wish I had had two red cards for this class.
1st Gibb-Stuart’s Chantismere Push My Button Compact, richly marked blenheim with so much quality. Soft melting expression, large dark eyes, well feathered ears framing the face. Good length of neck leading to well laid shoulders, level topline. Moved well with reach and drive from his correctly angulated quarters. Lost out on top awards due to his lack of animation standing.
2nd Cunningham’s Verheyen Garrick JW As soon as this dog entered the ring my eye was drawn to his superb outline and exceptionally prepared , luxurious coat with great clarity of markings. On the table I found an excellent representation of the breed standard. Everything flows effortlessly from one part to the other . Just preferred the size and head of 1.
Class 5 YEARLING (12,4)
1st Knight’s Carolus Don Ricco JW ShCM Heavily marked Blenheim with classical qualities. Super size, well made with well laid shoulders, good bone, short-coupled loin (a rarity today). Kept a level topline standing and on the move. Moved with drive and accuracy. Completing the package he has a soft melting expression with beautiful large, dark eyes. Just needs more coat for top honours.
2nd Fisk’s Rebhann Hunky Dory This boy grew on me as the class progressed. Nothing exaggerated. Good size, well made and angulated body. Kept a great outline standing and on the move. Well marked with a lovely head and expression.s
Class 6. MAIDEN
1st Royce’s Stonepit I Believe In Dance At Rucazan
2nd Smith’s Beaudale Little Ted Ruby of 10 months. Nice shape standing and on the move. Super eye and nose pigmentation but would prefer a better eye shape and front angulation.
Class 7 Novice
1st Stonepit I Believe In Dance at RucazanSee Yearling
Class 8. GRADUATE (7,2)
1st Kerr’s Kinvaar Son Of A Gun Well marked, glamorous tri boy who moved with elegance. Well balanced with masculine head, well set on ears with plenty of feather. Chest moderate with a good spring of rib.
2nd Hunter’s Spennithorne Dream Thyme This boy has the most lovely head and expression with large dark eyes , tapered muzzle with plenty of cushioning. More compact than 1. Moved a little erratically at times.
Class 9 POST GRADUATE (7,0)
1st Waters’ Kinvaar Make My Day At Maibee This blenheim boy stood out for his great make and shape. Good bone , front and rear angulation , length of neck and spring of rib. Lovely coat and feathering. Soft, melting expression. Pigment off today.
2nd Finlay’s Sorata Beckham At Marisk
Richly coloured ruby with plenty of feathering. Good length of neck , well laid shoulders, good bone, moderate chest, well sprung ribs. Kept a level topline at all times. Moved very well with correct parallel movement.
Class 10. SPECIAL POST GRADUATE (9,1)
1st Finlay’s Sorata Beckham At Marisk See 2nd Post Graduate
2nd Hobbs’ Beaconsfylde Fade To Black See 2nd Novice
Class 11. SPECIAL POST GRADUATE (6,0)
1st Aldous & Smith’s Aranel Colby What a beautiful boy with everything in the right place. I couldn’t wait to go over him and see if my eyes were deceiving me. They weren’t! This dog has the most stunning head, with beautiful, lustrous eyes giving a soft melting expression. Excellent neck and shoulders with correct angulation, good bone and spring of rib. To top it off he has a well broken coat that is of super texture. Sadly he did not want to help his handler show off these attributes was very unhappy. Such a pity. When he gets his act together he will easily be a CC winner.
2nd Crane’s Spindlepoint Macallan Into Cranvarl Well marked blenheim who presented a smart outline with good length of neck leading to well laid shoulders. Moved convincingly around the ring. Needs more coat.
Class 12. LIMIT (15,4)
1st Searle’s Stonepit Franco I Believe Striking tricolour in fabulous coat and condition. His owner should be congratulated on presenting him so immaculately. This dog is far more than just coat. He is of the correct size with a strong, well angulated body. Super neck and shoulders and firm topline with correct tail set. He has beautiful eyes, well cushioned muzzle , well set ears which frame his face and presented an excellent outline standing and on the move, never losing his topline and continuously wagging his well set tail. Moved steadily and accurately around the ring. Pulled him out for the last few in the challenge.
2nd Mangham’s Garlouchi Just Magic Of Charnavale JW
This boy catches the eye on the move with his excellent movement and strong body never losing his topline. Very well made with good neck and shoulders, strong bone, excellent forechest and spring of rib and correct length of loin. Masculine head, with excellent bite , well cushioned muzzle and good pigment. Would just prefer a slightly bigger eye and a little less weight on his shoulders.
Class 13. SPECIAL OPEN (whole colour) 1,0)
1st Fraser’s Tingewood Tomintoul
Reserve in Sp.Wholecolour PG . Ruby boy whose temperament stood out. Very happy standing and on the move. Lovely dark eyes, but needs more fill. More coat would be preferred.
Class 14. SPECIAL OPEN (resident in scot) (11,2)
1st Gibb-Stuart’s Chantismere Push My Button See 2nd Post Graduate
2nd Finlay’s Ellemich Joe Malone At Marisk
Another dog that I was looking forward to examining on the table. Beautiful shape with correct angulation. Soft but masculine head with lovely dark pigment. A size bigger than 1. Hope he gets his 3rd CC as he deserves it.
Class 15. OPEN (7,0)
1st Imabo & Vorderstrasse’s Bonitos Campaneros Imperator
What an exciting exhibit, presented so expertly to maximise his potential. Wonderful ring presence. Mature, richly marked blenheim of good size with firm well muscled body. Excellent reach of neck , well angulated forequarters, correct spring of rib and length of loin. Never lost his topline standing or on the move with his well set on tail carried so well. It was a pleasure to watch this dog power round the ring with strong parallel movement and drive from his solid hindquarters. His head is classic in proportion with well cushioned muzzle, correct stop and generously filled beneath the eyes which are large and expressive and framed by profusely feathered ears which he used to his advantage. Every time I looked at this boy he was showing his heart out and demanding the CC. I was delighted to award him his 2nd CC + BIS in complete agreement with my co-judge.
2nd Lovel’s Lovetrac Mark Of Distinction JW
I have never seen this boy look better. Some time out of the ring has obviously worked as he was keen and showing his heart out. Another richly marked Blenheim of classic proportions. I was impressed by his correctly made body and gorgeous head and expression. Moved with great verve but this enthusiasm occasionally meant that he lost his cadence and this was the difference between the CC winner and the RCC. I do hope that this boy gets his crown as he is a worthy candidate.
